Deputy Editor, Intelligencer

Intelligencer’s Deputy Editor will play a central role in shaping and running New York’s news and politics coverage. The job involves guiding ambitious enterprise reporting as well as sharp, engaging daily stories and live coverage. We are looking for someone with strong news judgment, a feel for Intelligencer’s voice, and the ability to generate and refine high-quality story ideas. The Deputy Editor will work closely with the Intelligencer editor and newsroom leadership to maintain the quality and ambition of the section and to help steer coverage through both major news moments and longer-term projects.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Help define and drive the editorial vision for Intelligencer, with a focus on news and politics and an eye on business, tech, media, and other core areas of coverage.
- Shape a mix of short, medium, and long-form journalism, including breaking-news responses, analysis, features, and enterprise stories.
- Oversee the day-to-day workflow of the team by assigning stories, editing drafts, and ensuring timely publication.
- Manage and mentor writers and editors, offering guidance on reporting, structure, and story development.
- Bring in new contributors and maintain strong relationships with freelancers and potential hires.
- Work with art, audience, audio, and social teams to develop packages and support multimedia storytelling.
- Help set priorities and make quick editorial decisions during high-intensity news cycles.
- Uphold standards of clarity, accuracy, fairness, and Intelligencer’s distinct voice.
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in workflow, strategy, and coverage as the news environment evolves.
WHO YOU ARE
- At least six years of experience doing journalistic work that overlaps with Intelligencer’s aims, including significant time spent as an assigning editor.
- A strong record of publishing high-quality reporting, smart commentary, and timely news coverage.
- An ability to meet deadlines and comfort working within the 24/7 news cycle.
- Proven skill as an editor, with experience editing features, guiding reporting projects, managing daily coverage, and writing or refining headlines.
- A history of productive collaboration with writers, editors, and cross-functional teams.
- A steady supply of ideas for everything from quick-turn news posts to ambitious enterprise pieces and multimedia storytelling.
- The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and operate confidently within a fast-paced news cycle.
- Clear communication and strong organizational skills.
- Familiarity with Intelligencer’s sensibility and an interest in helping shape its future.
