About the Team
The System Test Engineering team is responsible for validating the reliability and interoperability of complex hardware systems that integrate wireless, sensing, and actuation technologies. We ensure that subsystems coexist seamlessly under real-world conditions, driving the test strategies, tools, and processes that allow products to scale reliably into production. Our work spans RF, firmware, and system-level testing, requiring close collaboration across engineering disciplines.

About the Role
OpenAI is seeking an EMC/Coexistence Test Engineer to lead the definition, development, and execution of coexistence (CoEx) testing for complex, multi-subsystem products. You will own the test matrix, automate and execute test cases, and analyze results to ensure wireless, sensor, and actuator modules operate reliably together without interference. Success in this role requires both deep technical expertise in wireless and sensor systems and strong cross-functional collaboration with RF, firmware, and systems teams.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 4 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Define and maintain a comprehensive coexistence test matrix across subsystems and operating modes

  • Develop, automate, and execute coexistence test cases spanning wireless, sensor, and actuator modules

  • Collaborate with software teams to implement control sequences for entering specific test modes

  • Analyze test data to identify interference or performance degradation and drive corrective actions

  • Ensure protocol coverage across wireless bands/encodings, sensor configurations, and actuator duty cycles

  • Document test procedures, configurations, and results to ensure reproducibility and compliance support

  • Work with systems, RF, and firmware engineers to refine test methods and align mitigation strategies

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Hold a B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field

  • Have 8+ years of experience in system-level test, wireless test, or sensor/actuator integration

  • Possess a strong understanding of wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, BLE), including coexistence considerations

  • Bring experience with sensor and actuator control, including low-power/low-noise modes

  • Are proficient in test automation (Python preferred) and data analysis tools

  • Can interpret hardware and firmware specifications and translate them into actionable test procedures

  • Have strong debugging and problem-solving skills in multi-subsystem environments

  • Communicate effectively across cross-functional teams

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with coexistence testing in consumer electronics or IoT devices

  • Knowledge of RF test equipment, spectrum analyzers, and wireless protocol analyzers

  • Familiarity with firmware development or scripting for embedded systems

  • Prior experience defining and managing a system-level test matrix

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements related to wireless coexistence and interference
