Who We Are
Nava is on a mission to #fixhealthcare. Nearly 160M Americans rely on their employers for healthcare — yet the system is broken, bloated, and dominated by incumbents who resist change. Nava fuses deep benefits expertise with cutting-edge technology to deliver a modern, transparent, and affordable healthcare experience.
Founded by seasoned entrepreneurs and backed by leading investors, Nava is one of the fastest-growing benefits brokerages in the country. We’re the first to combine brokerage know-how with proprietary tech like HQ: our AI-powered benefits platform, designed to help HR teams take control of renewals, simplify strategy, eliminate spreadsheet chaos, and empower employees to navigate their benefits with ease.
In a $50B industry hungry for change, Nava is built to win — lowering costs for employers, delighting employees, and reshaping how healthcare works for millions of Americans.
About the Role
At Nava, great client outcomes are driven by smart strategy and smart strategy starts with rigorous financial insight paired with a strong point of view. We’re seeking an Alternative Funding & Risk Strategy Consultant (exact title TBD) to help shape how Nava approaches self-funded and alternative funding strategies across our client base.
This is not a purely analytical role. We’re looking for someone who can pair deep technical expertise with consultative judgment. Someone who understands the mechanics of self-funded plans, underwriting, and stop-loss structures, and can confidently answer not just what the numbers say, but what we should do about them.
You’ll play a central role in building Nava’s alternative funding playbook, advising our Client Success and Sales teams on complex renewals and prospect strategies, and helping establish internal standards around when and how we recommend self-funding to employers.
What you’ll do
Alternative Funding Strategy & Advisory
Act as a subject matter expert on self-funded, level-funded, and captive strategies across mid-market and large employer groups (100–5,000 EEs)
Advise internal teams on funding structure decisions, risk tolerance, and financial tradeoffs
Develop and refine Nava’s philosophy, frameworks, and playbooks for alternative funding recommendations
-
Provide authoritative guidance on rate setting, trend assumptions, and funding structures
Financial Modeling & Scenario Analysis
Stress-test assumptions and clearly document methodology to ensure transparency, defensibility, and scalability
Interpret carrier and stop-loss underwriting outputs with an informed, critical lens
-
Build and maintain sophisticated financial models in Excel and Google Sheets to support:
Self-funded feasibility studies
Stop-loss deductible and attachment point strategies
Best, expected, and worst-case cost scenarios
Multi-scenario renewal modeling
Renewal & Growth Strategy Support
Partner closely with Client Managers on complex renewals, serving as a strategic financial partner rather than solely an analytical resource
Support Solutions Consultants on RFPs and prospect opportunities where alternative funding may be appropriate
-
Review and compare stop-loss quotes and contract terms, identifying financial and contractual risks including lasers, exclusions, and contract basis
Insights & Narrative Development
Translate complex data into clear financial insights and recommendations
Contribute directly to client-facing strategy discussions when appropriate as a technical and financial authority
-
Help shape the financial story behind renewal and funding recommendations, not just the underlying numbers
Tooling & Continuous Improvement
Build and evolve modeling tools, templates, and internal best practices
Identify opportunities to standardize and scale analytical and underwriting approaches across the organization
Serve as a resource and mentor to Client Managers and Consultants seeking deeper financial understanding
What you’ll bring
We’re seeking an experienced individual contributor with a strong analytical foundation and deep exposure to self-funded employer plans. Specifically:
5–8+ years of experience in alternative funding, underwriting, actuarial-adjacent, or advanced markets roles within a brokerage, carrier, or consulting environment
Advanced Excel and Google Sheets skills, including complex financial modeling, scenario analysis, and multi-tab workbooks
Hands-on experience analyzing medical and ideally pharmacy claims data for mid-market and large employer groups
Strong understanding of self-funded plan economics, stop-loss structures (specific and aggregate), and funding strategy tradeoffs
Ability to move from raw data to strategic recommendation, not just reporting outputs
Comfort partnering with client-facing teams and occasionally participating in client or prospect conversations
Excellent project management skills and ability to juggle many parallel analyses
Nice-to-haves:
Prior stop-loss underwriting or carrier-side experience
Exposure to captive arrangements
Actuarial training or actuarial-adjacent background
Experience setting or influencing rate assumptions
-
Experience building internal financial frameworks or playbooks
