Principal Responsibilities and Expectations
We are seeking a forward-thinking and experienced leader to unify our diverse data functions as Apartment List's first VP of Data & Insights. This team encompasses Data Science, Analytics, Data Strategy, and Economics, serving a broad range of company-wide needs. In this pivotal role, you will drive our data strategy and execution, building and scaling the data function to unlock the full potential of our data assets.
As the VP of Data & Insights, you will be instrumental in solving complex marketplace problems by navigating and balancing competing needs across our Renter, Lister, and Marketplace pillars. You will shape Apartment List platform's marketplace dynamics, leveraging data insights to fuel innovation, guide product development, and inform business strategy.
Our ideal candidate is data obsessed; a visionary leader with extensive experience scaling data organizations, a deep understanding of data science and product analytics, and a relentless drive for outcomes. You thrive on balancing high-level strategy with hands-on execution, inspiring and mentoring your team to create a world-class data organization. This role reports directly to the Chief Product & Technology Officer.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Driving Business Impact: Bring data to the forefront of addressing the company’s most challenging problems, from planning data science infrastructure to defining company-level KPIs and goals
  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute Apartment List’s comprehensive data strategy, aligning with business objectives and driving data-driven decision-making across the organization
  • Unified Vision: Shape the strategic direction and vision for a cohesive data and analytics organization, integrating Data Science, Analytics, Analytics Engineering, and Economics into a unified team
  • Team Growth & Development: Lead, scale, and mentor a high-performing team of 15+ data professionals. Foster talent development, inspire future leaders, and build a world-class data organization.
  • Hands-on Execution: Lead by example with an action-oriented mindset that drives results. Dive into key projects, work alongside the team, and be comfortable in both strategic and tactical environments.
  • Executive Influence: Partner with EPD Leadership and C-suite leaders to translate complex data insights into actionable strategies. Facilitate critical conversations that drive impactful decisions across cross-functional teams.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, Operations, Strategy, Finance and Sales to embed data into every aspect of the business, cultivating an insights-driven culture
  • Data Infrastructure & Scalability: Ensure the data architecture and analytics infrastructure are optimized for scalability, overseeing data governance, quality, and accessibility
  • Insight Delivery: Leverage data to inform product development, user experience, marketing strategies, forecasting and business operations, ensuring data-driven insights reach all corners of the organization
  • Innovation & Experimentation: Stay at the forefront of industry trends, incorporating cutting-edge technologies and methodologies into data practices. Harness AI and machine learning to unlock new capabilities.
Key Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Experience: 15+ years of data leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior role leading data teams at scale. You have successfully led a data organization in a larger company and are excited to apply that experience in a startup environment.
  • Hands-on Expertise: Deep understanding of data science, product analytics, and/or data engineering. Proven technical proficiency in tools like SQL, Python, R, BigQuery, GCP, and modern data platforms.
  • Track Record: Demonstrated ability to build and scale teams in fast-paced environments. You’ve led teams through transformation and fostered a high-performance, results-driven culture.
  • Leadership & People Development: Strong people leader with a passion for mentoring and growing world-class teams. You’ve built a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
  • Strategic & Tactical: You can seamlessly switch between high-level strategy and tactical execution, comfortable with ambiguity and thriving in a dynamic environment
  • Collaborative: Proven ability to work cross-functionally with other departments such as Product, Engineering, and Marketing to drive business outcomes through data insights
Here's the Pay Range:
At Apartment List, we carefully consider a variety of factors to determine compensation for each position, including the role, level, and work. The US base salary range for this position is:
  • $292,000 - $378,000 TTC (including $239,000 - $310,000 base salary) + equity
This reflects the compensation target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Please note, the compensation details provided do not include benefits and perks that we offer.
We also rely on market indicators along with considering your work location, job related skills, experience and relevant education and training, to determine compensation that is fair and competitive for you. Apartment List will consider paying compensation near the higher of the range in exceptional circumstances, where candidates have the experience, credentials or expertise that would warrant such consideration. It is always our goal to hire exceptional talent and we would be happy to share more about compensation during the hiring process.
